​A history of the women of the Union Pacific Railroad in North Platte, Nebraska.



This book is divided into four sections. Section 1 begins with the first employee, Florence Stamp, and includes the women of WWI. Section Two covers the women of WWII and is followed by the era of affirmative action between 1960 to 1990. Current employees are in Section Four.



Vintage photographs  show how women dressed when they replaced the men who went off to fight WWII.



​Research and interviews provide an honest and informal glimpse into what women experience working in a man's world.  Engine cleaners, telegraph and telephone operators, crew callers, store department workers, stenographers, timekeepers, clerks, firemen/oilers, carmen, engineers and managers — the women filled all positions. Perhaps one day a woman will be president of the company.

The book salutes women who POWERED UP Bailey Yard in the past and are still POWERING UP the world's largest classification yard in North Platte, Nebraska today.
